Reading Rockets offers a wealth of reading strategies, lessons, and activities designed to help young children learn how to read and read better. Our reading resources assist parents, teachers, and other educators in working with struggling readers who require additional help in reading fundamentals and comprehension skills development.
Background
The majority of reading problems can be prevented. This screening tool was developed to "catch" children early. It's for parents and caregivers who may not know a lot about reading readiness but who care that children develop the skills they need to be ready to read.
The screening tool was developed by the National Center for Learning Disabilities. Its development was led by Grover J. Whitehurst, Ph.D., while Professor of Psychology and Pediatrics and Chairman of the Department of Psychology at SUNY Stony Brook. (Dr. Whitehurst has since been appointed as Assistant Secretary of Education for the Office of Educational Research and Improvement at the U.S. Department of Education.) Christopher Lonigan, Ph.D., conducted the field tests for the tool.
